La Lupa

Olio
Extra Vergine
D'Oliva
Five hundred olive trees, most of them older than the people who tend them, on a hillside in Lorenzana. Pressed in October, brought to London by hand. This is the oil our family has been making for years, finally with a name.
The grove
Lorenzana, Tuscany
01 / 06The hillside
The grove sits on a hillside near Pisa. Olives have grown here for centuries.
02 / 06Old trees
Some of the trees are over a hundred years old. They've outlived everyone who planted them.
03 / 06Pruning by hand
Every winter, the trees are pruned by hand. It's slow work and most of it is done by family.
04 / 06The pigs
Nothing sprayed, nothing irrigated. Pigs graze between the trees and feed the soil, and the edges of the grove are left to themselves.
05 / 06Harvest
The olives are picked in October, by hand, and pressed within hours at a mill nearby.
06 / 06Cold-pressed
Cold-pressed in a single run, unfiltered. What comes out is what you taste.
Why La Lupa
Lupa means Wolf in Italian. A camera trap caught them one afternoon, moving through the trees. The grove has always had wolves. We didn't know until we saw the footage. The name came after.

The family, the grove
Lorenzana
The land has been in our family for generations. My aunt Chiara has managed the grove for over thirty years, working with the rhythm of the trees, the seasons, and the animals that live alongside them. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sprayed.
I'm her nephew. I live in London. Every year we bring some of the oil over so that people here can taste what we've been eating for as long as I can remember.
This isn't a big operation. We make a small amount, and when it's gone, it's gone until October.
